Requirements at a glance

Key criteria

  • Invest at least NZD $5 million in acceptable Growth category investments (direct investments, managed funds; philanthropy capped at a maximum of 20% of the total amount invested) held for 36 months, OR at least NZD $10 million in acceptable Balanced category investments (direct investments, managed funds, listed equities, philanthropy, bonds, property developments) held for 60 months
  • Investment funds must be earned or acquired lawfully, transferred directly to New Zealand through the banking system, and invested in New Zealand in New Zealand dollars (NZD); investments must not be for your personal use
  • Spend minimum time in New Zealand during the investment period: at least 21 days (Growth) or at least 105 days (Balanced, reducible by 14 days per additional NZD $1 million invested in Growth-type investments, up to a maximum 42-day reduction)
  • Meet health requirements (medical examination and chest X-ray) and character requirements (police certificates from countries of citizenship and any country lived in for 12+ months in the past 10 years; be a fit and proper person)
  • After approval in principle, provide evidence of your acceptable investments within 6 months of receiving the approval in principle letter
  • Keep the funds invested throughout the investment period, providing evidence of investment status at 24 months and at completion of the investment term

  • Evidence that investment funds were earned or acquired lawfully
  • Police certificates from each country of citizenship and any country lived in for 12 or more months in the past 10 years
  • Medical examination and chest X-ray results
  • Evidence funds were transferred to New Zealand through the banking system and placed in acceptable investments (within 6 months of the approval in principle letter)
  • Ongoing evidence of investment status at 24 months and at the end of the investment period
